At the intermediate level you begin to work harder to make the language part of your real life. Making a new language part of your life takes effort. It is not something a beginner will be able to do. When you are at the intermediate level (you can understand most sentences if you have time and your dictionary), you can begin to programme yourself to react in your new language.
